Let's welcome another great addition to CTN's Super Sponsor family-- Mare Lloba!
Mare Lloba is an illustration brand focused on detailed happiness. Suitable for presents and autopresents. It started out as a little idea who wants to expand and became a real business! :D
Marina of Mare Lloba--located in Barcelona, Spain-- does everything from couple's portraits to custom logo designs (even for facebook or blog banner work). She's all about the intricate details so you can really customize any work to suit your style and personality.
This painting was drawn and digitally painted. You also receive it in a Digital File, high resolution (300dpi), jpg, 8x8 inch. Marina will work with you on any details. She can do printed and intricate styles for your clothes of accessories as well. I kept it simple and just asked for sunflowers. :)
Here are the reference photos I sent her from my phone. I'm not a big selfie person so I really had to dig for any picture of me that was decent. I basically sent her all the pictures I sent to my aunt since she is always asking for updated photos! I think I sent her the exact same three pictures though from different days though... oops. :D
The first thing I was was of course the sunflowers! I wasn't sure how Marina was going to incorporate them but they accented my blue shirt really well. Marina's artistic style really showed in this portrait. All of the examples I have seen of her portrait work have a "side" angle of a person that is different and interesting. Some things I noted about Mare Lloba's style: the big eyes, no eyelashes, and happy grins.
If I had known Marina was going to draw me from the side, I probably would have sent her a side angle picture! LOL. It's pretty difficult painting someone with a front view and translating it to a side view because the proportions of the face changes. But I really enjoyed seeing a different depiction of me through an artist's eyes. It's a more sophisticated and mature depiction of me which surprised me as well. I like the light highlights she added into my hair since it's so long and black. It added a nice contrast the look more layered and real. What do you think? This is my first ever portrait so it was such a cool experience. Does the portrait look like me?
I can't wait to share Mare Lloba's other custom work below.
How did your shop get started? It all started with a printer. The one I had broke so I needed money to buy myself a new one. I discovered Etsy one day and several days later I was all excited on the forums, asking about SEO, getting new ideas for selling, buying frames and making pictures of some paintings I wanted to sell.
Then I started listing Graphic Design items and Custom Portraits. I was really eager to work, and still I am! I’m in the end of my Graphic Arts studies and I studied Illustration too. Etsy for me represents a little step (or not that little, who knows x) into “real life”, business, my work on the Internet as an Illustrator. Even though the shop isn’t a success so far, I’m convinced to make it work, you’ve been warned! : D (Dana: I'm loving the motivation and positive energy!)

I like when I get a new custom portrait order to make, they are all different and fun to do. People are always enthusiastic about the final product and so am I. I also love making illustrations on my own, not necessarily to sell. I enjoy traditional painting too (acrylic). I absolutely love painting, so anything where I have freedom to add lots of colours! I don’t enjoy working B&W. (Dana: I love the details to this portrait above from the dreamy position, to the little details of the flowers and the clothes.)
Reading what people tells me about the portraits, how they want their clothes designed, some little details that are important to them… it’s so nice to be part of that. Actually, one of the last commissions I did, was for a family and the father asked me this commission for them. It was a secret present for her wife and he asked me to dress up their girls as Frozen characters Elsa and Anna. The girls were so excited too when they saw the illustration!!! It was very sweet to do that ^^

Each commission is treated in an unique and special way. I don’t use any patterns or anything. I start from scratch with each one. First I start with a little draft that I sent to the client to see if it fits with his/her ideas. I create a composition that works with the people, different poses, different backgrounds and I’m also open to add as much details as you want. I take my Etsy little job very serious. I have found in Etsy a really nice community and great people who are willing to help you always. I must say thanks to that ^^
That is the end of my review and interview with Mare Lloba! Be sure to check out her shop and see all the custom work she does for portraits but also for logos as well!
My take home message: Mare Lloba's art walks a delicate line between caricature, animation, and sophistication of portraits that is intriguing and special. Marina is a wonderful artist to collaborate with and it was a pleasure working with her on my very own portrait.
